HAMILTON: this vessel has brought 6 male prisoners from India, destined for Port Jackson; to which place it is expected she will sail to-morrow. Hobart Town Gazette, 24 May 1817. Ship News. On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. John married Matilda Byrne in 1826. Matilda was born in the colony, the daughter of Patrick Byrne (Convict, Marquis Cornwallis, 1796) and Sarah Best (Convict, Britannia, 1798). 1825: John CAREY – free by servitude – Mary 1819, employed by Mr Broughton, Appin (see NSW and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849, New South Wales General muster A-L 1825).


1819: John CAREY 20, 5’8”, dark ruddy complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, native place Cork (see NSW Convict Indents, 1788-1842; Bound Indentures 1818-1819).


1824, 12 August: Granted Ticket of Leave #328/1262 - John CAREY, b 1800, carpenter; 5'7½”, sallow complexion, dark brown hair, dark blue eyes; for the District of Parramatta. Notation: "The original was granted in pursuance of... [an] order of the 7th Nov 1822 stating that he had been always in Government employ" (see NSW Tickets of Leave, 1810-1869; Register of tickets of leave, 1824-1827).
