John CARLESS was convicted at Warwick, England on 4 Aug 1838 for stealing a sum of money. 15 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Marquis of Hastings' arriving there 18 July 1839. Aged 20 yrs; shoemaker. Married man, wife Ann. 3 children. Place of birth: Stafford, England (Ref convict record) VDL: Assignments of work services. 1842: at Launcston 22 July 1845: Ticket of Leave granted. 1846: Recommended for a Conditional Pardon. (N.B. There was another convict named John Careless in the Colony at abt the same time.)
