The following inf is given re John's wife, although not under the name Anne BEAN but Ann BAIN/BAYNE/BANE who it would appear is the one and same person, based on the following information: Marriage: 9 Dec 1850 - Ann BANE, full age, spinster to John CARLESS, full age, coachman at the Church of St. George, Hobart. (ref. 37/1/9 no. 330). It is thought that the surname was recorded incorrectly and that Ann's name was actually 'BEAN'. Children: 4 Sept 1850 - John CARELESS born at Hobart. Father - John CARELESS, coachman. Mother - Ann CARELESS, formerly BAIN. (ref. 33/1/3 no. 2688A) 22 Feb 1854 - James Henry CARELESS born at Hobart. Father - John CARELESS, Cab Proprietor. Mother - Ann CARELESS, formerly BAIN. Argyle St. Hobart. (ref. 33/1/5 no. 629) When these two boys were admitted to the Queens Orphan School, in 1861, (parents in prison) the record states the mother is Ann BAIN/BAYNE per ‘Greenlaw’ and father is John CARELESS per ‘Triton’. There is no record of any person under the name Bain or Bayne on the ‘Greenlaw’. Ann’s child, William BAIN, born at the Female Factory, Hobart 1847 died at age 3yrs on 10 Nov 1850 recorded as “William BAIN or CARELESS. Father given as John CARELESS or BAIN. Coachman’s child. (ref. 35/1/3 no. 359 & Convict Conduct Record under name “Bean”) 11 Dec 1860: Ann & John CARELESS were both charged with larceny, in a cab, and both sentenced to 6mths prison. This is when the two Careless boys were admitted to the Orphanage. (ref. report of crime in Trove newspapers, 12 Dec 1860 Mercury newspaper)

John CARELESS, aged 10 yrs 4 mths admitted to the Queens Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart on 11 Jan 1861. Protestant religion. Mother - Ann BAYNE per 'Greenlaw' ship to Colony now under prison sentence for 6 mths. Free by servitude. Father - John CARELESS per 'Triton' ship to Colony now under prison sentence for 6 mths. Free by Servitude. 22 Sept 1854 - James Henry CARELESS born at Hobart. Father - John CARELESS, cab proprietor. Mother - Ann CARELESS formerly BAIN, Argyle St. Hobart. Ref. 33/1/5 no. 629. James Henry CARELESS, aged 7 yrs, was admitted to the Queens Orphanage, New Town, nr Hobart on 23 Jan 1861 as both his parents are recorded as being in prison. Father - John CARELESS per 'Triton' ship to Colony. Mother - Ann BAIN/BAYNE per 'Greenlaw' ship to Colony. Discharged to the care of his parents on 1 June 1861. (ref. Friends of the Orphan School, St. John, New Town, nr Hobart. SWD26/4, 27, 28) 10 Nov 1850: Death of William CARELESS/BAIN at Hobart, aged 3 yrs, cabman's child - accidentally scalded. John CARLESS was convicted at Stafford, England on 9 March 1842 for horse theft - one mare. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Triton' arriving 19 Dec 1842. Single man; a grocer; 5'5" height; aged 25 yrs; Protestant; can read & write; ruddy complexion; dark brown hair; Hazel eyes. Place of birth: Birmingham (ref. convict record) Brother: James - I left my business possessions to him and he was my principal witness but he absconded with my property. VDL: 2 and a half Probation Period. 1st Station Gang - Jerusalem, VDL. 1844: Meritorious conduct in preventing a serious injury during an assault on another person. 1846: at Launceston. Neglect of duty. 3 mths imprisonment with hard labour. 29 Feb 1848: Ticket of Leave granted. 1849: at Hobart. Misconduct with a female passholder. 3 mths imprisonment, with hard labour. 1849: at Hobart. Breach of the 'cab' act. Fined. 24 Apr 1849: Application or permission to marry - John Carless (per Triton) to Elizabeth Norton (per Arabian). Did not proceed. 19 Nov 1850: Application for permission to marry - John Carless (per Triton) to Ann Bane (free) 9 Dec 1850: Marriage. At St. George's Church, Hobart, John Carless, adult, coachman to Ann Bane, adult, spinster. (ref. 37/1/9 no. 330) 8 March 1852: Free Certificate issued. 11 Dec 1860: Larceny - 3 mths imprisonment, with hard labour.
