Sophia Carman was transported for seven years on "Northampton" after being sentenced at the Norfolk County Assizes beginning on Tuesday 18 October 1814. Bury & Norwich Post, Wed 26 October 1814 p.3 "At the County Sessions, SOPHIA CARMAN, for stealing a great coat and two silk handkerchiefs from Mr Read, of Hoxne in Suffolk, was sentenced to be transported for seven years." She did not have to wait long to be taken to the 'Northampton' for transportation. She and Elizabeth Shipp may have been taken to Deptford, near London, to be on-boarded, not Portsmouth, since that was where most other convicts from regional areas were embarked (see e.g. Barton & Carter from Bury, Scottish women Baillie, Findlater, McGavin and the Inglis's; York convicts Turner, Williamson and May). Norfolk Chronicle, Saturday, 19 Nov 1814 p.2 "Thursday last, [17 Nov] two female convicts, Elizabeth Shipp and Sophia Carman, were conveyed from the Castle to Portsmouth, for seven years' transportation each ..."
