John CARMODY was convicted at a Court Martial, Newfoundland, Canada for desertion - absent 12 mths on 16 May 1839. 14 yr transportation sentence. Hulk Report: "good". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Mandarin' arriving there 30 June 1840. Ship surgeon's report: "good". Married man - wife Jane at Blackburn (ref. recorded on Conduct Record) 2 children VDL: 6 July 1840: 18 mth Probation Period. No other details on his Convict Conduct record. N.B. There were other convicts in the Colony by the same name.
