William CARPENTER was convicted at Sussex, England on 7 Aug 1830 for housebreaking. Gaol Report: "very bad". Previously convicted and whipped. Life Sentence. Hulk Report: "good". Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'John' arriving Jan 1831. Single man; aged 18 yrs; labourer/well digger; can read & write; Protestant. Native place of birth: Petersfield, Hampshire, England (ref. Convict record) VDL: Assigned to Grant. Severl notes of misconduct and punishments. Sent to the Chain Gang at Bridgewater. 1832: at Bothwell. 1836: at Launceston 8 Feb 1839: Launceston: charged with sheep stealing. Committed for trial. 2 May 1839: To be sent to Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales, but administered by the VDL Government). Returned to VDL.
