John Carroll was transported on the Waterloo, departing 21st May 1836 and arriving 6th Sep 1836 with 220 passengers.
1829 - Waterloo's first voyage arrived at Sydney Cove 9 July 1829. 180 Male Convicts. 2 Died on voyage. 7 sent to the hospital on landing. Total mustered; 171. Stephen Addison - Commander Michael Goodsire - Surgeon Superintendent [His wife was a passenger] 1842 - The Waterloo voyage of 1842 was wrecked on 28/8/1842. 189 people drowned, these being 143 convicts, 15 men of the 99th Regiment, together with 17 wives and children, the boatswain Mr. Chiverton, the sailmaker, the carpenter and 11 of the crew. Convicts were then received in Cape Town Prison from the wreck of the Waterloo, 2nd September 1842. They then completed their voyage to VDL per “Cape Packet” which arrived on 23/11/1842.

The Convict Indentures state that John Carroll was 14 years old. He could read and write; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Antrim. He was a tailor's boy. John was convicted of stealing blankets at County Antrim on 6 January 1836. He had one prior conviction and served 6 months. Physical attributes: Height 4 feet 11 inches; complexion pale fair and freckled; hair red and eyes hazel. Transport number 8. Prisoner number 36-1813. Indenture hand written comments have faded and are a bit difficult to read. Received Certificate of Freedom on 2 April 1845 (number 45/453) at the district of Wellington, NSW.
