Margaret CARTHY was convicted at Cork, Ireland on 2 Jan 1849 for stealing buckets. Previously convicted for stealing potatoes and turnips. Co-charged with Catherine Ford. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Australasia' arriving 29 Sept 1849. Aged 30yrs; single woman; country servant; Roman Catholic; 5'0 3/4". Native Place: Co. Cork, Ireland. Brothers: John & Richard (ref: Convict Indent) VDL: Anson Hulk Station Gang. Work services at Campbell Town & Hobart. 21 Dec 1852: Ticket of Leave granted. Marriage: 3 Jan 1854 - married Alfred HAYWARD (transported per ship 'Rodney'. (ref: noted on her Conduct Record, so no confusion with the other Margaret Carthy.) ref: 52/1/6 3 April 1855: Conditional Pardon approved. 4 Jan 1856: Free Certificate issued.
