On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. SURREY SESSIONS. KINGSTON, October 28. Danl. Cartwright, James Cartwright, and James Farrant were put to the bar on five indictments, charging them with committing various robberies in the neighbourhood of Tooting and Streatham, during the night of the 12th inst It appeared that the above neighbourhoods have, for a long time, been infested with whole gangs of robbers, who never let a night pass without committing depredations of some kind or other. Between six and seven o’clock in the morning of the 13th of October, Wm. Brewer, a constable of Lambeth, met the three prisoners nest Brixton Washway, each of them carrying something, and suspecting they were returning to town with their night’s plunder, he took all three into custody, and on examining what they had got he found a basket of tools, which afterwards proved to belong to Mark Mercer, carpenter, who had left them tn house at Tooting in which he was working; two muslin dresses, and other articles, belonging to Joseph Kaye, Esq., of Streatham, in whose garden they had been left to dry; a coal and apron which were ascertained to belong to Mr. King George, of Tooting, from whose back premises they had been stolen; coat and cloak belonging to Mr. John Vann, of Upper Tooting, who had left them hanging at his back door the preceding night seven rabbits, the property of Mr. Thomas Hodgekiss, of Streatham ; and some ducks and china, which had not yet been owned. stated themselves to be carpenters, and had come from Brighton. The jury found the prisoners Guilty upon four indictments. The prisoner Farrant was sentenced to be transported for life; and the two Cartwrights for 21 years. A criminal petition was made by a William Brewer, on behalf of his son, Thomas Brewer, who was transported. The petition mentions the arrest of the three men for burglary.: National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/38/143. Date. 1838 Sept 14 – 1838 Nov 12. Prisoner name: Thomas Brewer. Prisoner age: 23 years. Prisoner occupation: Shoemaker and former private in the Queen’s Rifles. Court and date of trial: Surrey Quarter Sessions, Newington, 11 September 1838. Crime: Stealing a cloak or mackintosh coat in the Walworth Road [Newington] on 20 August 1838. Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Gaoler’s report: ‘Character bad, convicted before’. Annotated (Outcome): ‘Nil’. Petitioner(s): William Brewer (father), of Lambeth [Surrey] undersigned by 46 inhabitants of Brixton [Surrey] and its environs. Second application by William Brewer. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Good character given by employer; petitioner’s good character and service as night constable. Additional Information: Ordered to Leviathan [convict hulk].
