13/10/1851: Married Ellen Connell (Duke of Cornwall 1850) at St. Johns, New Town. They had 4 children. Ellen was 36 years old and had 2 children, John was 30 and was a barber. 28/3/1883: John Cartwright died in Hobart.

Application for Permission to Marry: 08/02/1851: John Cartwight, Candahar to Mary Barton, Sea Queen (52/1/4). No registration of marriage on index. (Mary Barton did marry Thomas Coombes 21/3/1853) (There are 5 John Cartwright's listed on Tasmanian Archives, as convicts.)

John Cartwright was convicted at Lancaster on 30/08/1841 for housebreaking and stealing umbrellas and hooks. Previous conviction for pick pocketing.10 yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania)on the 'Candahar' from Spithead on 17/03/1842, arriving 21/07/1842. Native birth place: Manchester Married man (no children listed) Aged 21yrs; 5'1 1/4"; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; black eyes; trade - umbrealla maker.Protestant; reads; writes a little. Brother: George - at native place Uncle: Thomas Robinson, umbrella maker. (Name of wife or parents not given) Hulk Report: 6mths. Good conduct. Ship Surgeon's Report: General conduct orderly. Period of Probation: 2yrs. Offence 06/04/1844, Larceny - 6mths to be added to Probation. hard labour, in chains, coal mines. Released from 1st stage of Probation 21/04/1845. 02/061845: Coal Mines - misconduct - existing period of Probation extended 2mths. 13/06/1845: Coal Mines - misconduct - 14 days solitary. 08/02/1848: Ticket of Leave 26/10/1849: Launceston. Felony, receiving. Ticket of Leave revoked. 12mths imprisonment & hard labour. Free Certificate 15/03/1852.
