John Casey was born in 1794 in Tipperary, Ireland. He was the eldest son of Mark Casey and Ellen Maher who at the time lived in Cashel, County Tipperary. His brother, Thomas, is described in a later chapter. John had been arrested for insurrection in Cashel, County Tipperary and faced trial at Carlow on 10 April 1821. He was sentenced to seven years transportation. Transportation records of the period record that John was probably married to a Catherine Doran. The description of John Casey was given as 5'4", fair and ruddy, dark brown hair, dark hazel eyes, quiet manner with a mole on his right knee. John Casey had been applied for by a Mrs William Broughton to work as a bullock driver on the property Yamnamgaroo on the Goulburn Plains. The NSW General Convict Muster of 1828 also shows John at Goulburn Plains with Mrs Broughton. This is a trade John excelled at. It became the trade of three of his sons. In the late 1880s,the Casey bullock teams did most of the carting for the Bywong and Tallagandra districts. After his pardon, John took up the position of bullock driver for Mrs William Broughton of Yamanamgaroo Goulburn Plains in 1828. John finally settled at Sugarloaf, Tallagandra near Gundaroo. John Casey was married to Caroline Purcell in 1833 by a travelling priest who registered the marriage at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney. They had 12 children. John Casey died 22 May 1882 at Tallagandra Gundaroo and was buried in Gundaroo Roman Catholic cemetery.
