Convict Notes

Somehow along the way Sarah Cassidy from Monaghan Ireland on the Margaret in 1836/7 seems to have replaced the record for this completely separate Sarah Cassidy from Preston, Lancashire. Details amended. Sarah Cassidy was convicted at the Lancaster Quarter Sessions held at Preston 15/10/1834. She was a singlewoman from Preston, aged 23 at the time of the trial. The newspaper [Preston Chronicle - Saturday 18 October 1834] reported it thus- Sarah Cassiday, 23 was charged with stealing at Preston one basket, one shawl and other articles, the property of Ellen Barnes. The prosecutor is keeper of a house of ill-fame at which the prisoner lodged and the articles were taken away at a late hour of the night. The prisoner was found guilty and having been before 11 times committed to the house of correction, was sentenced to be transported for seven years. She had several stays in Newcastle gaol whilst in NSW in which she was variously described as 5ft, ruddy complexion, stout, cross eyed, brown hair, a native of Killarney. She was imprisoned for 14 days for insolence to her employer Benjamin Cox in January 1836. [New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books, 1818-1930- Newcastle- 1837] 31/7/1837 she was on trial at the Maitland County Petty Sessions accused of drunkenness and again insolence by her employer Benjamin Cox and was imprisoned 21 days. [New South Wales, Australia, Criminal Court Records, 1830-1945- Monthly Returns of Trials of Convicts- 1832-36- 1837] Sarah now 25, was granted permission to marry 50 year old George Pavin (Norfolk) in Dec 1836 at Maitland. She is listed as a dairymaid/country work [New South Wales, Australia, Registers of Convicts' Applications to Marry, 1826-1851- 1837] The only confusion lies in her birthplace- one of the jail docs lists Killarney, the other looks most like Carlisle (Cumbria). There is a birth record of a Sarah Cassidy late 1811/early 1812 at Wigton, near Carlisle, possibly her?
