Catherine Sampson was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Convict Notes
The Convict Indentures state that Catherine Sampson is 26 years old. She could neither read or write; religion Roman Catholic; married with no recorded children and a native of County Meath. She is a laundress. Catherine was convicted of shop lifting at Dublin City on 12 July 1838 and sentenced to 7 years. She had two prior conviction and served 6 months and 6 months. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 2 1/4 inches; complexion pale and freckled; hair dark brown and eyes dark hazel. Transport number 132. Prisoner number 130-39. Comment on Indenture entry state that husband Thomas Sampson, a prisoner for life, three years ago. Received Certificate of Freedom in 1845 (number 45/1321).
