James employed Ticket of Leave man 'Toapin' York in 1881. He died at York as an expiree in 1887.

James was born about 1823. As a labourer and with a wife and 4children he was convicted of manslaughter in Leeds and sentenced to 15years; he arrived at Fremantle on NORWOOD; described as literate Roman Catholic 5'5" red hair lt grey eyes full face fresh complexion middling stout-with a burn on each foot scar left hand. He received his Ticket of Leave in 1873. In 1876 he was working for himself as general servant mowing shepherd teamster and received his Conditional Release in 1877 & he was Certified Free in 1881.
