Colonial Secretary Index: CHAPMAN, John. Per "Mangles" 1822 Jan 15: Attached to Patrick's Gang. On return of proceedings of the Bench of Magistrates, Parramatta (Fiche 3297; X643 p.1b) 1824 Oct 16: John Chapman with four other prisoners charged with feeding and harbouring Bushrangers – John Chapman – Discharged Remarks: Attached to Revd S Marsden's clearing gang. On return of proceedings of the Bench of Magistrates, Parramatta (Reel 6023; 4/6671 p.54) 4/8/1825: Patterson's Plains - Aged 26, native of Clifton, absconded from J. Boughton. John was described as fair pale, hair sandy flaxen, eyes hazel 5'7.45". His convict number was 4501. His Ticket of Leave number was 36/2067. He actually reached the age of 35 in 1837, agreeing with his birth date of 1802 not 1785. It was not this John who moved to Adelaide.

John was apparantly born in 1802 & became a carter & wagonner at Clifton. He eventually obtained his Ticket of Leave & in 1882 moved to Adelaide as convict or on bond The Illawarra history tels us he was born in 1785, he was employed at Illawarra by D (McKellar) & the Ticket of Leave he was granted was later cancelled for disorderly conduct at Bungonia.
