Convict Notes
Charles Campen was convicted at Colchester on 22 Dec 1840 for stealing - a parcel from a carrier's cart. 10yr sentence. (Once in prison before.) Sent to Parkhurst Prison for Boys, Isle of Wight for 3 yrs then transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Mandarin' arriving 16 Oct 1843. Aged 16yrs; single; shoemaker; Protestant; can read & write. Native place - Colchester Father: John Mother: Mary Sister: Maryanne Brother: John Station Gang in Colony - Jerusalem, VDL. Further offence, tried at Hobart QS - stealing sixpence. Guilty. To be kept at hard labour for 1 year, to be sent to Jericho. Name was then "Charles Compton". Discharged to his Freedom, from Hamilton Depot. 21 Aug 1847.
