Convict Notes

I would just like anonamus to respond to the fact that Mary Ann O'Brien is also my g.g, grandmother. I dont have very relatives in Australia and it might be nice to communicate with one.

Joseph's first wife Mary Ann O'Brien arrived on the "Lady Rowena" on 17/5/1826 and was assigned to the Captain as his "attendant" while the ship was in Sydney. The marriage may well have been arranged as Sydney was known to be unsafe for single women. She remained with Joseph until 1831 when he reported her as a convict absconder. In 1832 she was granted a Cert.of Freedom under her maiden name. She is also my great grandmother. Robert H Byrnes
In 1827 Joseph married Mary Ann O'Brien (ex Lady Rowena) which arrived Sydney on 17/5/1826 with 100 female convicts on board. In 1831 Mary's name appeared in Sydney newspapers as a convict absconder. The complainant was her husband, Joseph Child. Apparently they must have seperated as Joseph married again in 1846 and Mary, who was to become my Great Grandmother had married Francis Ellis in 1845.
