James Childs was convicted at Dorset on 29/07/1830 for horse stealing. Previous conviction for stealing a jacket and bridle. 7yr sentence. Gaol & Hulk Report: bad. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Argyle' arriving 05/08/1831. Married man - wife Elizabeth and one child at Fareham, Hants. Father - William Childs a Baliff nr native place. 2 brothers & 2 sisters. Aged 25yrs; born Wickham nr Portsmouth, England; 5'6 1/4"; dark complexion; dk brown hair; blue eyes; farmer/ploughman/can make butter & cheese. Assignments in Colony. 1832: Mr. N. Nicholls 1835: Mr. H. Cutts
