Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Walter Chisholm was a soldier in the 99th Regiment and on the convict transport ship 'Somersetshire' when charged with Mutiny on the high seas (some prisoners & soldiers wanted to take the ship and go to America). Voyage via the Cape where he was court martialled and convicted. Life Sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), arriving 11/08/1842 on the 'Surrey'. Native Place: Kelso, Scotland. Protestant; Farm labourer & 6yrs in the 99th Regiment; 5'9 1/2"; grey eyes; dk brown hair; fresh complexion; literate. Brothers - William & Peter Sisters - Mary, Ellen & Betsy. 4yrs Probation, Wedge Bay. Ticket of Leave 30/03/1852 Conditional Pardon 05/06/1855
