Convict Notes

ADM 101/58/7 1827 Medical and surgical journal of the Persian convict ship for 11 April to 10 August 1827 by James Patten MD, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in transporting female convicts from England to Van Diemen's Land. ADM 101/58/7/1 Folios 10-11: Elizabeth Chittenden, aged 40, Convict; disease or hurt, 'mental aberration'. Put on sick list, 16 May 1827. Last date of treatment, 23 May 1827, 'from this date gradually recovered'. Had been selected to act as matron of the prison. Developed the idea that she had been poisoned by some of the prisoners and that her clothes and belongings would be stolen. She was removed from her messmates for fear that they would worsen her condition and kept in the hospital, the surgeon intending to keep her there for the rest of the voyage.
