Old Bailey Online EDGAR CHURCH. Theft; grand larceny (to 1827). 4th December 1816. Text type Trial account Defendants EDGAR CHURCH Offences Theft > Grand larceny Session Date 4th December 1816 Reference Number t18161204-14 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 14. EDGAR CHURCH , was indicted for stealing, on the 9th of November , one trunk, value 16s. , the property of Henry Bott and Wm. Payne . HENRY BOTT. I am a trunk-maker ; I live in Leadenhall-street ; I have a partner whose name is William Payne . I lost the trunk about two o'clock, on the 9th of November; it was taken from the door. THOMAS TERRY . I am an officer; on the 9th of November, about twelve o'clock, I heard a cry of stop thief; the man turned into Leadenhall-market; I followed, and met a young man with the prisoner and trunk in his custody, JOHN BRODERICK . A person came into the shop and and gave the alarm, that a trunk was stolen; I traced the prisoner by a man on the top of a coach pointing towards Leadenhall-market; as soon as I got into the market the prisoner and trunk was brought up to me by a strange man; I gave both to the officer. JOHN WARD . I saw the prisoner take the trunk from the door; I am sure he is the man. (Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner's defence. I saw the trunk lying on the pavement, and asked who it belonged to; nobody answered, and I took it. GUILTY . Aged 19. Transported for Seven Years .
