During the hours of divine service, on Sunday evening se'nnight, the dwelling-house of an old man named Joseph Sutton, blacksmith at Shrewton, was broken into, and 14 guineas, half guineas, and other moneys—the savings of many year—stolen therefrom. The old man man did not discover that had been robbed until the Wednesday following. the Thursday morning, two labouring men, named Benjamin Bryant and Daniel Clark, were at the Bustard Inn, Salisbury Plain, where they exhibited more money than the landlord thought had honestly come by, and hearing of the robbery at Shrewton, soon after they had left his house, he immediately procured a constable, and traced them to the King's Arms Inn, on Devizes Green where they were apprehended with part of the money stolen in their possession. They were examined before a Bench of Magistrates at Salisbury Tuesday last, and fully committed for trial at the next March Assizes. Salisbury Journal, 1 Dec 1834. Daniel Clarke and Benjamin Bryant, convicted house-breaking at the last Assizes, and sentenced to one calendar month's imprisonment to hard labour, and then to transported for life ; Salisbury Journal, 11 May 1835.
