According to newspaper records Dutton Clarke was convicted of stealing two cheeses. However he was actually tried for arson, but was acquitted. He may have been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder after serving for five years in the 9th Regiment of Foot in the Penisular Wars as a Bugler.
