Text type Trial account Defendants JOSEPH CLARKE Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 14th February 1833 Reference Number t18330214-37 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 461. JOSEPH CLARKE was indicted for stealing, on the 15th of August , 1 coat, value 2l.; 2 waistcoats, value 14s.; 1 pair of trowsers, value 20s., and 1 hat, value 16s., the goods of William Maurice , and that he had been before convicted of felony . WILLIAM MAURICE. I am a carver and gilder , and live at Westminster . I knew the prisoner for about two months, and in August last he met me - he represented himself in great distress; I said I would give him a night's lodging - he went home with me; I gave him three nights lodging - I went home in the middle of the day afterwards, and missed this property; he was then gone, and I did not see him again till he was taken, which was five weeks ago - I asked him what had become of my things; he said he had sold them to a Jew who travelled about the streets. JOSEPH WARD (Police-constable C 172). The prisoner came and gave himself up to me. GEORGE BOX (Police-constable C 65). I have a certificate of the conviction of John Smith; the prisoner is the person. GUILTY . Aged 22. Transported for Fourteen Years .
