Charles Cleave was convicted at Devon on 24/07/1833 for stealing a lamb. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Moffatt' arriving 09/05/1834. Hulk report - orderly. Ship Surgeon's report- well behaved. Married man, 5 children. Wife Mary at Keaton, near native place. Ploughman; aged 34 yrs; 5'4 1/2". Native place - Cherry Church. Assignments in Colony. Ticket of Leave 14/04/1842. Conditional Pardon approved 15/01/1846. Applied to have his family sent out but does not seem to have happened. Lived in the Ross district - farmer and also licensee of pub. Married Matilda Inder (remarriages permitted in Colony)10/01/1855 Campbell Town district. 5 children born (mother's name is also recorded as "Hendon".) Matilda died 1866 aged only 37yrs.
