Convict Notes

Stephen Clifton, 18, pleaded guilty to setting fire to a barn, the properly of John Baker, Pembury.—Ten years’ transportation. South Eastern Gazette, 6 Aug 1850.

Fired a barn full of machinery which was replacing the men's labour, thus making them jobless & forced into towns (often London).Second child of 11 (though he never saw the youngest, Maria. His parents were Benjamin & Jane of Pembury, Kent. His elder brother Thomas called his son Stephen (my direct ancestor),this tradition has continued to date (so five generations of "Stephens" have been born since 1856).His physical description could still apply to male descendents though the height has increased a little(?), probably due to better diet & marrying tall women:)
