It looks as if her sister Sarah turned to prostitution after Louisa was transported. Sarah Coates and Emma Durrant, common prostitutes Wickham Market; 21 days’ each, with hard labour. Suffolk Chronicle, 22 Feb 1851.




Louisa Coates, was charged with stealing a peck of potatoes, the property of John Cole, greengrocer, Lower Orwell street. It appeared that about seven in the evening, the prosecutor, who was sitting in the keeping  room the back of the shop, hearing some one in the shop, came out, and found the prisoner concealed behind  the door, with the potatoes in her possession. Committed for trial. Suffolk Chronicle, 9 Oct 1847. Ipswich borough Sessions.  Louisa Coates, 20, pleaded guilty of having stolen three quarters of a peck of potatoes, the property of John Cole: seven days hard labour. Ipswich Journal, 23 Oct 1847. Louisa Coates, 24, pleaded guilty to the charge of having, on the of November, at Woodbridge, stolen one cotton print dress, of the value of five shillings, the properly of Hannah Hatcher, and was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment,  the first and last week solitary. Suffolk Chronicle, 8 Jan 1848.  Louisa Coates and Sarah Coates, as vagrants, at Wickham Market; 21 days each with hard labour. Suffolk Chronicle, 2 March 1850. Sarah Coates, and Louisa Coates, late of the parish of Brandestone, were brought up charged with having, on the 10th inst., at Snape, stolen from the dwelling-house of Walter Webber, one umbrella, and other articles: committed for trial at the next assizes. Ipswich Journal, 20 July 1850. Sarah Coates and Louisa Coates Pleaded guilty to stealing various articles, the property of Walter Webber of Snape; the former 6 months imprisonment;  the latter, having been convicted before, 7 years transportation. Bury and Norwich Post, 7 Aug 1850.




Born at Brandeston, Suffolk. She lived at the Plomesgate Workhouse in 1841 with her mother Elizabeth Coates (nee Bridges) and her sister Sarah Coates (born 1831).




Louisa gave birth to illegitimate daughter Sarah Louisa Coates on 18 Feb 1851 while imprisoned at Millbank Prison. She was probably conceived while in prison and died on 12 May 1852 aged 14 months at Hobart Female Factory.
