Convict Notes

Colonial Secretary Index. COBBING, James. Per "Mangles", 1824 1824 Oct 30 On list of convicts landed from the "Mangles" and forwarded to Parramatta for distribution (Reel 6013; 4/3512 p.646)

James Cobbing, aged 18. was charged with a rape upon the body of Maria Fuller, a little girl under ten years, at Mildenhall. Mr. Andrews stated the case for the prosecution in a most temperate and judicious speech. The little girl proved that on Sunday the 27th April last, she was returning home from church, in the afternoon, in company with her sister, about a year and half older than herself, when they were met near Hurst Wood by the prisoner, who gave two bird's eggs to each of them, and then proceeded to take hold of the younger girl, and threw her down, upon which the elder ran away. The child in the most interesting and artless manner related sufficient to prove that the villainous act had been fully perpetrated, and that she resisted to the utmost of her power. Upon reaching home, she communicated what had passed to her mother. Other witnesses were called, who corroborated this testimony, and in particular a man who heard the screams of the poor child at the time stated. The Jury returned a verdict of Guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy, on account of his youth, to which his Lordship said he should certainly pay attention, and the prisoner was not sentenced.
