Family connections for John (Cobcroft) are: Some amendments added Jul 2025. COBCROFT John (Cobcroft) was born in 1760. He was tried on 16 4 1789 for highway robbery with others at probably Old Bailey, sentenced to death relieved to Life, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH. He became Free by Servitude about 1796. He was released from prison & lived as a farmer at Wilberforce with Sarah (Smith perhaps her second relationship, explaining a long period as defacto) whom he married in 1842 at Wilberforce. He died on 4 6 1853 age93 & was buried at Wilberforce. [Some details for John (Cobcroft) & Sarah (Smith) have been taken from this Website] Sarah (Smith) was born in 1772. It is recorded, perhaps wrongly, that she was tried at Old Bailey for grand larceny, sentenced to 7years, held probably at London/Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict or free on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship NEPTUNE. (Smee indicates she was a wife of someone on arrival; there are many male (Smith)s on the NEPTUNE difficult to assess). The publications of Profesor Craig James (Smee) regards her as free. After joining John (Cobcroft) she titled herself as Mrs (Cobcroft). She died on 31 5 1857 age85 & is buried at Wilberforce. [Noted a Sarah (Smith) is recorded as dying on 18 6 1829 age59 at Kent St Sydney-& another on 7 11 1829 at Castlereagh St Sydney (late of the Globe Tavern)=both buried at St James CofE Sydney] [Some details taken from this Website] John (Cobcroft) & Sarah (Smith) produced 10children: 1.Richard William (Cobcroft) was born on 3 2 1793 & baptised on 17 3 1793 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. Probable birth is about 1760, he is not the John Cobcroft born at Keighley, Yorkshire, in 1756.
