Christopher was 5' 7" tall, sallow complexion, brown hair, dark hazel eyes, blind of right, small raised mole on left cheek, blue mark of a tree inside right arm, scar on right eyebrow. 27/8/1834 Sydney Gazette: Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney, 25/8/1834. Patrolman deceased___Christopher Cochrane. 1834: NSW BDM - Christopher Cochrane died aged 30 - no district given.


1833, 11 May: Christopher COCHRANE's Certificate of Freedom No.33/523, issued on this day, gives his birth date as 1804 and his native place as Madras. He was tried on 10 May 1826 at Secunderabad, about 630km north of Madras (now Chennai). He was listed as a clerk and gunner who was convicted for desertion and forgery (see New South Wales, Australia, Certificates of Freedom, 1810-1814, 1827-1867).




Christopher Cochraine arrived in Hobart on the Caroline, from Calcutta. He was one of 8 prisoners from Calcutta. Shipping Intelligence. On Monday arrived, from London, whence she sailed on the 1st of November, via Hobart Town on the 6th of April, the ship Calista, Captain Hawkins, with merchandize, and 100 Saxon, and 260 Derwent sheep. Passengers, Captain Bunster, and Messrs J. Andrews, J. J. Daker, D. Burn, C. Sladden, F. Watkins, and F. Anley, Mrs. Ridge, 2 children, and servant, with 4 steerage passengers. The Calista also brings 8 prisoners, who arrived at Hobart Town on the Caroline, from Calcutta. Sydney Gazette, 16 Apr 1828 In Hobart they were transferred to the barque Calista which had arrived from London on 12th March, in readiness for transfer to Sydney. The Caroline was to be fitted out for use in the whale fishery. As well as the eight prisoners, the Calista brought to Sydney 100 Saxon and 950 Derwent sheep and other merchandise.
