Margaret COCHRANE (also k/a REID) was convicted at Glasgow, Scotland on 27 Sept 1852 for theft. Previous offences. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Duchess of Northumberland' arriving there 21 April 1853. Married woman, 1 child; aged 39 yrs; 5'1" height; plain cook & laundress; swarthy complexion; brown hair; brown eyes; Protestant; can read & write. Native place of birth: Dumbarton, Scotland. Husband: John (surname not recorded on Convict Indent). Father: David (ref. Convict record) Mother: Ellen (ref. Convict record) Brothers: John, James Sisters: Jane, Anne VDL: Various work service placements. Several records of misconduct & drunkeness. 1853: at Hobart 1854: at Bruni (Bruny) Island 1855: at Hobart 1855: at House of Correction, Hobart. 29 July 1856: Ticket of Leave granted. APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 13 May 1856 - Margaret COCHRANE (per Duchess of Northumberland) to George MARTIN (per Governor Philip). ref. 52/1/7. MARRIAGE: 15 Sept 1856 at St. George's Church of England, Hobart. Margaret COCHRANE, aged 42 yrs, widow to George MARTIN, aged 43 yrs, mariner. ref. 37/1/15 no. 239. DEATH: 9 Feb 1866 - Margaret Cochran MARTIN - Murdered by her husband, George MARTIN. (ref. Noted on her Convict Record & Inquest). Death reg. 35/1/35 no. 140. Wilfully murdered, at Recherche Bay, Esperence. Female, aged 52 yrs. Wife of George MARTIN. Report in newspapers The Mercury, 1 & 5th Feb 1866.
