John Coffee and his brother William were both tried and convicted of the same offence at Nenagh Tipperary, Ireland on 18/03/1843 for assaulting the habitation of Teddy Dwyer, appearing armed. Both stated "they were not there". Life sentence. Prison Report: Good conduct. Transported on the 'Orator' arriving Van Diemens Land 21/11/1843. Native Place: Co. Tipperary. Brothers: Thomas, Michael. William (on board same ship). Age 19yrs; Single; Roman Catholic; 5'7"; pale complexion; dk brown hair; blue eyes. Ploughman and farm labourer. Colonial Offences: Station Gang - Maria Island (small island off East Coast of Tasmania) 20/02/1844: Misconduct fighting in the yard and wounding fellow prisoners with knife - discharged. 21/11/1845: Emerged from Gang. 02/11/1846:Constable at Hobart - neglect of duty, falling asleep - dismissed. 10/06/1850: Constable at Hobart - neglect of duty, falling asleep - 6 wks imprisonment and hard labour. Assignments at Hobart, Coal Mines, Richmond (Tas), New Town, Risdon and Black Brush. N.B. There are several other John Coffee's who were transported to Van Diemens Land.
