The Castle Forbes was a 439-ton merchant ship built by Robert Gibbon & Sons at Aberdeen, Scotland in 1818. She made two voyages transporting convicts from Ireland to Australia. Castle Forbes arrived at Port Jackson, New South Wales on 27 January 1820. After their arrival in Sydney, 136 men were sent on to Van Diemen's Land Colony (now named Tasmania), arriving in Hobart 1 March 1820. 4 men remained in New South Wales and 4 deaths recorded on this voyage. Christopher Coffey was tried and convicted at Dublin 22/06/1819 and given a 7 yr Transportation sentence. He was aged 25 yrs, a Grocer's clerk, 6' tall, hazel eyes, black hair, dk sallow complexion, well behaved. Arrived Van Diemens Land 04/03/1820. Colonial Offences: 06/02/1821: assault & beat Wm. Butcher - acquitted. 04/10/1822: Steal 2 bushels of mill sweepings and also wheat from Mr. Fisks Mill - 25 lashes and returned to Port Arthur. 04/11/1822: Absond after being mustered to go to church - extra labout 14 days. 19/02/1823: Neglect of duty - dis. 20/02/1823: Neglect of duty - 25 lashes. 27/12/1824: Neglect of duty - 50 lashes. 12/01/1825: Having a goose in his possession - 50 lashes. 19/12/1825: Violent and suspected of receiving trousers, knowing them to be stolen. 28/12/1825: Absent from Gang - reprimanded. 29/06/1826: Certificate of Expiration of Sentence (Hobart Town Gazette)
