James Coghlan and Catherine Coghlan were charged with the murder of Michael Kennedy, of Crokers Park, on the 261 h of September last, at Stone-hall in this county - Mary Kennedy sworn, and examined by Mr. Henn Recollects being at the fair of Stone-hall on September 1831. The deceased was her Son ; he was at work on that day, and went to the fair in the evening,—her son who was in Mr, Donoogh’s house,—got a stroke of square wattle, which knocked his head the table, the prisoner was the person who gave the stroke, the female prisoner gave him a stroke of churn-dash before he had time to recover from the effects of the brother’s blow, and felled him to the ground ; ... ... His Lordship concluded by directing the Jury find a verdict of Manslaughter, which would the safest course for them to pursue. The Jury retired for about five minutes, when they brought in a verdict of Manslaughter—The boy to be transported for life, and the girl for seven years. After the passing of the sentence, the prisoners and their friends set up a most terrific cry, which they continued for several minutes. Mr. Freeman applied to the Court to say that the boy was only 16 years of age and the girl about 18. His Lordship said that he would not change the sentence. Limerick Chronicle, 10 Oct 1832.
