Convict Notes
Daniel Cole was born on the 26th December 1805 to Elizabeth Cole and was baptized on the 9th February 1806 at Chingford, Essex. In the early hours of Friday 22nd March 1833, a hay stack belonging to Mr William Barrett of Sewardstone Green near Chingford, was partially destroyed by fire. Daniel Cole was arrested along with Joshua Burling on the charge of arson. At their trial on the 19th July 1833 the Essex Assizes they both received a guilty verdict and were sentenced to be executed on Friday the 2nd August 1833. The death sentence was reprieved at the last minute, and both were transported for life. Daniel Cole died in Launceston, Tasmania on the 6 February 1887
Daniel Cole labourer and Joshua Burling labourer (v) William Barrett Arson Waltham Abbey Essex Assizes Ipswich Journal 13 July 1833. Joshua Burling was also on board 'Fairlie 1834'. Daniel Cole was listed as 26 years old on arrival. Native Place: Essex. Daniel was illiterate, protestant, single, 5'5" tall, brown and little pockpitted complexion, dark brown hair, chestnut eyes, whiskers meeting under the chin, two scars left side of forehead. 13/7/1836: Absconded from Newcastle gaol 8th July - Listed as David Cole. (There was no David Cole on board the Fairlie). 9/7/1834: 50 lashes for absconding. 29/9/1840:12 months in Irons. 3/2/1841: Maitland - Sheep stealing - 10 years. 1841: 5ft 5in, stout, swarthy complexion, brown hair and eyes. Admitted to Newcastle gaol. 19/2/1841: Sent to Norfolk Island. 6/6/1844: Arrived VDL per 'Lady Franklin' from Norfolk Island. 13/2/1846: TOL 9/1/1849: CP approved. 25/1/1852: Steerage passenger Launceston to Melbourne per 'Halcyon'. Conditional Pardon Sip to colony: Lady Franklin. 28/3/1856: Was a miner at Fryer's Creek, Victoria. 1857: Was a butcher at Fryer's Town. 12/12/1860 The Argus, Melbourne, Vic.: DANIEL COLE, last heard of at Daisy Hill in 1863,-any information respecting him will be thankfully received.
