Convict Notes


1832: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as 20, a farm labourer and single. He said he had been convicted for highway robbery and had a previous conviction for vagrancy (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON18-1-10$init=CON18-1-10p12). 1840, 14 December: John Collins received a Ticket of Leave (ToL). 1845, 15 April: He was convicted for larceny under £5 and sentenced to 12 months' hard labour. He also lost his ToL and had a recommendation for a Conditional Pardon withdrawn. 1846, 1 December: His ToL was reissued. 1847, 30 November: John Collins's Conditional Pardon was approved (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON34-1-3$init=CON34-1-3P442).


1831, 4 August: Convicted for robbery. 1831, 30 August: Sent from Croydon and admitted to the Cumberland hulk, moored at Chatham, where he was listed as 18 years old. Sent from the hulk on 14 February 1832 for transportation (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849; Cumberland Register, 1814-1833).
