26 May, 1853: On arrival in VDL, John Collins was listed as convict #27881, a lighterman, 23 years old, single, Protestant, born at St George's, Southwark, Surrey, and able to read and write (http://foundersandsurvivors.org/pubsearch/convict/chain/om8147). Family: Father Timothy, and sisters Maryann and Jane (Baltimore). TRIAL: 6 May, 1850: John Collins was convicted at the Old Bailey. TRIAL TRANSCRIPT: #911. JOHN COLLINS , stealing 1 trunk and 1 chest of tea, value 17l.; the goods of Valentine Sentence and another; having been before convicted: to which he pleaded GUILTY. Aged 22.— Transported for Seven Years. (https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/) Note: He had a previous conviction for robbery from a ship -- stealing 40 pounds, sentenced to 12 months’ jail. --0--

OCCUPATION: He was a lighterman (boatman was the only option offered above).
