Convict Notes

Timothy Collins was possibly born in Ireland as his children were born there. Timothy and his wife Mary had three children, Bridget, Mary Ann and Michael. Timothy came to Tasmania as a convict, at the age of 50. No records can be found as to why Timothy was in Bristol, when he was convicted in the courts of Bristol, England for rioting and demolishing property. Timothy received a death sentence commuted into one perpetual banishment....Transportation. He was transported to Hobart, Tasmania in 1832. Timothy Collins along with 221 other prisoners sentenced to transportation sailed from Woolwich in February 1832 bound for Tasmania. The name of the ship was the Katherine Stewart Forbes. On his arrival at Hobart Timothy was assigned to William Bryant as a plowman and would have worked on one of the many farms the Bryant brothers owned or leased throughout Tasmania. Timothy received his ticket of leave on the 10th of August 1840 and his conditional pardon on the 20th September 1843 but is never allowed to return home. Timothy became a farmer in Tasmania and he owned 100 acres of land in the narrow valley of Glenfern. Growing crops and run a small amount of stock, his property was only a few miles from New Norfolk and in the same area he had worked as a convict.
