MAYO ASSIZES. CASTLEBAR, MARCH 20. On Saturday, Lackey Commins, W. Hynes, T. Rafferty, and George Boyle, were put upon trial for several offences connected with the Ribbon system. Lackey Commins was indicted capitally, under the White Boy Act, for delivering a message, on the of February last, at Kuane, in this county, tending to excite a tumultuous assemblage or confederacy of persons, under the name of Ribbonmen; and, under the same Act, he and the other prisoners stood charged with several transportable felonies, for taking illegal oaths, appearing armed, &c. The prisoner, Commins, challenged sixteen Jurors peremptorily, and three were set aside by the Crown, one of whom was afterwards sworn, when the panel was exhausted. Commins was found guilty of the capital charge, and received sentence, to be executed on the 21st of April. Hynes and Raftery were convicted of taking illegal oaths, and are to be imprisoned twelve months.  .. Saunders News-Letter, 25 March 1820. The Lord Lieutenant has been pleased to respite, until further orders, the execution of Lackey Commins, who was, at the last Assizes of the County of Mayo, sentenced to be hanged on the 21st instant, for delivering a message, with intent to procure an unlawful assembly of Ribbonmen.
