Richard CONNING was convicted at Kent, England 15 Dec 1823 for housebreaking. Previous offences for vagrancy and highway robbery. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Lady East' arriving 9 April 1825. Single man. Assignments in VDL. June 1825: Absent without a pass and in the company of Brown, the bushranger near New Town. To be sent to Maria Island (off the east coast of southern Tasmania). Several records of misconduct and severe punishments. An attempt to escape the island. Sent to Port Arthur Penal Settlement. Further charges and period of sentence extended. 1841: Free Certificate issued.
