Peter was tried and convicted at Monaghan, Ireland for stealing 11 sheep. Prior conviction for stealing boots. 7 yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemens Land on the 'Cadet' 1844. Peter was aged 20 yrs; 5' 3 1/2";fresh complexion; sandy hair; brown eyes; farm labourer; single man; Roman Catholic. Surgeon's Report: bad but improving. Station Gang: Broadmarsh, VDL. Numerous offences of misconduct, absconding, disobedience of orders. 22/09/1848: Disobedience of orders. 23/09/1848: Larceny - recommended to be transferred to Norfolk Island. Arrived N.I. 15/11/1848. Disobedience and severe punishment continued there. Returned to Van Diemens Land. Peter Connolly ended up becoming a notorious bushranger, with John Whelan. June 1855 convicted of robbery under arms and sentenced to death. 26/06/1855 Executed, at Hobart. numerous articles in local newspapers. Father: Terance; Brothers: Thomas, Phelan & Michael; Sister: Mary. All at native place of County Monaghan.
