Bridget Connors was transported on the John Calvin, departing 24th Jan 1848 and arriving 18th May 1848 with 92 passengers.
Built 1839 at Greenock, Scotland. Wood barque of 510 Tons. The 1848 voyage with Irish female convicts. The John Calvin, with 171 female convicts, arrived yesterday. She left London on the 26th December, and went to Kingston, when she took on board her prisoners, and left on the 24th January. There have been four deaths on board and three births, one infant still born. She did not touch any where and spoke no vessels for this place. Hobart Town Advertiser, 19 May 1848.

Born 9 Dec 1824 in Johnstown, Kilkenny, Ireland to John Connors (37) and Judy Foley (36). (Catholic Parish Registers, Ireland)




Bridget's brother James Connor, who also came to Tasmania, married and interestingly her husband James Dalton was a witness at the wedding. Marriage: 20 Mar 1853: James Connors (Ticket of Leave), aged 24yrs, bachelor to Ellen Gallagher (Pass Holder) aged 21yrs, spinster - at Catholic Church, district of Bothwell. Witnesses - James Dalton (husband of James' sister Bridget) & Crimmins (or Cummons). Ref. 37/1/12 no. 17.

Bridget CONNORS was convicted at Kilkenny 29 June 1847 for killing sheep - stated she pleaded guilty so that she could be transported to Australia. Never convicted before. 7yr transportation sentence to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'John Calvin' arriving 18 May 1848. Aged 21yrs; country servant; single woman; 5'. Native Place - Kilkenny, Ireland. Brother - James (transported) Mother - ..ly 6mths Probation Period in Colony. Assigned to the 'Anson' hulk. Clear Conduct Record. 9 Oct 1849: Application for permission to marry. Bridget Connors (per 'John Calvin') to James Dalton (free - could be free settler or term expired). Approved. 31 Oct 1849: Marriage to James Dalton at St. Josephs Church, Hobart. James aged 32yrs, labourer, bachelor. Bridget aged 23yrs, servant.
