Nine years after his arrival in 1820 Denis was issued his first Ticket of Leave. That document also gives us clues as to his appearance. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall with a ruddy complexion, dark brown hair and grey eyes. His ticket allowed him to remain in the district of Hawkesbury, north of Sydney. He was issued another ticket of leave in March 1833 because his first one had been returned mutilated and cancelled. It was annotated thus: “Cancelled for selling spirits illegally…” Three years later in 1836 he was resident in Newcastle jail for about four weeks while he was allocated to Patrick’s Plains in the Singleton area and he was described as a labourer. In 1844, nearly a quarter of a century after his arrival, he was recommended for a conditional pardon which was granted in February 1845 by Governor Gipps.Denis married convict Mary Sullivan in 1845. Eventually the couple lived and farmed in the Wollombi area, NSW. They produced seven children.
