Family connections for Maria Ann (Cook) are: COOK Maria Ann (Cook) was born on 30 9 1777. She was tried at probably Old Bailey, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 14 2 1792 after a voyage of 8months on PITT; much fever & attempts to escape from the ship resulted in deaths of convicts-of the 450convicts on board only 29 were alive at muster in May 1792 (or perhaps only this many could be mustered. She had a relationship with Daniel (Cubitt) & produced maybe 15children. She was Free by Servitude by 1797. On 8 9 1821 she was being victualled (on stores) living with husband & 3children. She died in 1840 age62. [Some details taken from this Website] Daniel (Cubitt) was born about 1768 & became a shoemaker & mariner living at Kings Lynne Norfolkshire. He was known also as Daniel (Hooper/Hooker). He was tried w/1other for stealing from Mr (Peckover) of Grimstone at Thetford Lent Assizes Norfolk in March 1786, sentenced to death commuted to Life, held at Castle of Norwich from 5 3 1786 & transported on GUARDIAN (which struck an iceberg & drifted for 9weeks), was transferred to Fleet ship NEPTUNE (a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate) at Cape of Good Hope & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 7 1790 (this Website has 2 12 1790 which may be the final arrival of GUARDIAN) after a total journey of maybe 18months on NEPTUNE; he was granted Conditional Pardon on arrival for efforts in saving the sinking ship. He was Free by Servitude by 1797. His Absolute Pardon was issued in 1808. In 1809 he received a town grant in George St on which he established Cat & Fiddle tavern in 1817 (which seems to have benn renamed New York Hotel). In 1810 he was a gaoler at Sydney gaol & in 1816 resigned from that job. In 1817 he was a publican at Cat & Fiddle hotel?. In 1820 he was appointed master of Row Boat Guards in Sydney. On 8 9 1821 he was being victualled (on stores) living with wife & 3children. He was involved in charge of smuggling against J (Nicholson) H.M. Dockyard Master Attendant in 1823. He was still Master of the Row Boat Guard on 31 1 1824. He was recorded in 1828 with Absolute Pardon, master of 'PRINTER', living with his son John. He died on 15 3 1831 age63 in Sydney.
