ENGLISH REPORT of CRIME: The Salisbury and Winchester Journal (Salisbury, England), Monday, February 17, 1817; pg. 4;  “Committed to the County Gaol – William Augur and Michael Cook, charged with breaking open a granary at Andover, and stealing six cheeses out of it.” The Salisbury and Winchester Journal (Salisbury, England), Monday, March 17, 1817; pg. 4; “WINCHESTER, Saturday March 15 The following prisoners, capitally convicted at the late Assizes, of various felonies, had the awful sentence of death passed upon them: … Michael Cook …” Michael Cook – England Criminal Register - tried Hants. [Hampshire’ Lent 1817 Assizes, Burglary. Sentence: Death recorded. INDENT - tried 3rd March, Southampton Assizes. Seven years. On landing, forwarded to Parramatta for distribution APPROVAL to MARRY, at Parramatta, approval given 6 December 1819 by "L Macquarie" (governor): Michael Cook convict per "Larkins" and Mary Mullet, convict per "Lord Melville" Certificate of Freedom dated 24 March 1824 Number 24/1891 - Native place: Hampshire, Age - Twenty Seven (therefore DoB 1797) Native Place - Hampshire Calling - labourer Height - 5ft 3&1/2 inches, Fair ruddy complexion with flaxen hair and hazel grey eyes. It's very possible that Michael Cook was the brother of convict Charles Cook who was transported for Life on "Royal George" in 1828. Charles stole a sheep at Andover, Hampshire and was tried in March 1828 (with James Baverstock). Charles was about ten years younger than Michael, born about 1808. The evidence for them being brothers is that when Charles, who was a drayman, died in 1838 in the vicinity of Lane Cove while driving a heavily laden timber carriage and falling under the wheel, the Sydney Gazette of 2nd May 1837 p.2 reported his inquest where it was said "his brother (unnamed) was sitting alongside of him, and witnessed his melancholy end, but was unable to render him any assistance." Michael Cook and Charles Cook both committed crimes at Andover in Hampshire, which county was recorded as the native place of both, and Michael was living at Hunters Hill at the time that the accident happened which occurred in the same area - "vicinity of Lane Cove".
