Please Note: There were 2 men names John Cookson, both convicted at Chester, who arrived on the Baring. This John Cookson was tried at the Assizes, for Burglary , and was sentenced to death, then later reprieved. The other John Cookson, was tried at the Quarter Sessions for a lesser offence, stealing fowls, and was sentenced to 7 years transportation. ------------------------------------------------------------------- John Cookson, & Benjamin Wantling (pleaded Guilty) for burglary.—Guilty—Leslie, accomplice, admitted evidence. Chester Chronicle, 4 Sep 1818. The following are the Sentences of the different prisoners convicted at our late Assize:—John Moors, John Williams, Benjamin Wantling, James Smith, John Cookson, Joseph Mayer, and Thomas Birchall. Death: the two former left for execution. Chester Chronicle, 11 Sep 1818.




John had a brother William Cookson (1792 - 1836) and he too was sent to NSW on the same convict ship, Baring. William married Sarah Johnson on 03 FEB 1823 • St John's Parish Church, Parramatta, NSW, Australia.
