24/3/1834 Salisbury and Winchester Journal Wiltshire, England: Winchester Peter Coombes, for stealing, at Binsted, a round frock, belonging to John Barnett; stands further charged with having stolen a digging-prong, belonging to Thomas Clement. Birth dates of 1807, 1813 found. 19/12/1842: TOL 12/3/1847: CP 28/5/1853: Permission to marry Margaret Gibbons (Tory). 11/7/1853: Married Margaret Gibbons, 36, a widow - he was 40, at Campbell Town. 21/2/1871 The Mercury, Hobart: A Bail Case.-Peter Coombes, brought up on warrant for non-obedience to a summons for neglecting to pay his wife's maintenance at the Cascades Invalid Depot, amounting to £2 14s., was remanded till to-morrow. 22/2/1871 The Mercury, Hobart: Maintenance -Peter Coombes appeared to answer a charge of non-attendance to a summons in failing to pay £2 14s for the support of his wife, Margaret Coombes, who was an inmate of the Cascades Invalid Depot, and towards whose support he had agreed to contribute. The defendant said he was a labourer, 64 years of age, and when able to work he earned about 5s or 6s a week. When his wife was admitted to the invalid Depot he undertook to pay 3s per week for her support. He could not say what his earnings were at that time, as he did job work when he was able. He was a man of temperate habits. He had a fixed abode when his wife was with him, but not since, had something the matter with his knee, which occasionally disabled him. He was unable to pay for the support of his wife, who had died about a week ago. He could not plough or use a scythe, or work with a sickle now, in consequence of his bad leg. He walked from Campbell Town to answer this complaint, being ten days on the journey. He was in custody, and was supported by Government on the way down. C.D.C. Jones said the proceedings had been taken by instructions of the Government. The man was residing at Campbell Town when his wife was admitted to the Invalid Depot, and was then earning good wages. For some time he contributed to his wife's support, but subsequently neglected to do so until proceedings were taken against him. The Warden of Campbell Town described the man as of intemperate habits, spending in drink the good wages he earned. A short time ago Coombes was in Hobart Town, and a summons was issued against him, but before it could be served upon him he left the district. He was arrested in Campbell Town, and brought to Hobart Town. The defendant was discharged, the Bench believing him to be incapable of paying tho amount. 11/2/1871: Margaret Coombes died at the Cascade Pauper Establishment, aged 60 years, of paralysis. No date of death found for Peter Coombe.
