As constable Purtell was passing the top of Bridge-street on Monday morning last, he observed something bulky under the apron of a female of suspicious appearance, whom he recollected to have been in the hands of the Police. when he searched her, and found two Leghorn bonnets which he suspected she had stolen from Mrs. Evans' seminary; on enquiry there, his suspicions were confirmed, the bonnets being identified by Misses Chisholm and Chambers as their property, and had been taken from the hall where they had deposited them. The prisoner, whose name is Esther Clowry, and who has been frequently detected in the act of stealing while soliciting charity, stated that the bonnets had been picked up in the street by her little girl, who accompanied her at the time, and it was her intention to endeavour to find an owner. Committed for trial. Sydney Herald, 22 May 1834.
