National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/109/106. Date. 1833 Dec- 1841 Mar. Prisoner name: Samuel Cork (or Samuel Corke). Prisoner age: 19. Prisoner occupation: Agricultural labourer. Court and date of trial: Kent Winter Assizes, Maidstone, December 1833. Crime: Sheep stealing. Initial sentence: Transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Character not known. Annotated (Outcome): Nil. Petitioner(s): Samuel and Ann Corke of Marden, Kent, the prisoner's parents, undersigned by 58 inhabitants of Marden. Samuel Cork senior, the prisoner's father, undersigned by eight inhabitants of Marden, including Richard Catt, the prosecutor. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Requesting imprisonment in this country; first offence; good character. Additional Information: Prisoner ordered to Retribution hulk. 24/12/1833 South Eastern Gazette Kent, England: Richard Ashdown, 29, John Austen, 22, Samuel Cork, 18, charged with stealing one ewe lamb, the property of Mr. Dawes, at Marden—Ashdown, transported for life, Austen, discharged by proclamation. Richard Ashdown arrived VDL per 'John Barry' 1834. Samuel Corke was 18 years old on arrival in NSW, he was literate, protestant, single, 5'1" tall, brown complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, small hairy mole back of lower right (looks like) arm. 1843: TOL, Liverpool. 17/2/1846: TOL Passport, on the recommendation of the Tumut Bench. 1/2/1849: CP
Samuel Corke was transported along with Richard Ashdown and George Burgess for sheep stealing .Samuel married Elizabeth Morris and they had 10 children my family tree goes from his daughter Catherine who married John Galley .Samuel committed suicide in 1880 as he had mouth cancer and was in alot of pain .
