He was one of the two witnesses at the marriage, by licence, of Ann Corney (17) to farmer, George Henry Rolph (26), on 25 July 1853, in the Kensington Cemetery Chapel, Glenorchy.




English Corney was a son of John Corney and Elizabeth English, and he was transported for ‘Stealing 2 cows and 2 heifers’. English was 5’4 ½” tall, could read and write, ruddy complexion, brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes. His occupation was a Wheelwright and painter – employed as a painter on board. 24/8/1847: TOL 1/4/1851: CP English married Elizabeth Penfold on 6/12/1828, they had 5 children born in Hurstpierpoint, Sussex – his family arrived in Australia on 26/8/1849 per ‘William Jardine’. They then had 2 more children born in Hobart, John and Henry b13/3/1854. 16/8/1881: English died at Glenorchy, he was 76 years old and died of disease of the heart, Dropsey. 18/8/1881 The Mercury, Hobart: CORNEY.—On August 16, 1881, at O'Brien's Bridge, English Corney, aged 76 years. The funeral will leave his late residence, O'Brien's Bridge, THIS DAY, August 18th, at 3 o'clock, when friends are invited to attend. Elizabeth died in 1873 of Burns. 5/12/1873 The Mercury, Hobart: CORNEY - On December 3rd, Elizabeth Corney, wife of English Corney, of O'Briens Bridge, aged 67 years. The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend. Brighton, Sussex, papers please copy.
